The Quiet Boom of Indie Mobile RPGs
For a while mobile RPGs meant endless grinding and menus buried in menus. Lately something has shifted — smaller teams are making tighter, stranger, more personal RPGs, and they're some of the best on the platform.
What makes them work is focus. Instead of a hundred systems, you get one strong hook — a lantern that's also your weapon, say — and the whole game revolves around it. That kind of clarity is hard to find in bigger productions.
Story is where indie RPGs really pull ahead. When a small team writes with care, party members feel like people rather than stat blocks. I've cared more about characters in ten-hour indie games than in some hundred-hour epics.
If you've written off mobile RPGs, it's worth looking again. The scene is quietly full of gems, and they respect your time far more than the old grind-heavy giants.
